Joe,

Maybe I wasn't clear -- I'm starting with a blank hard disk here, 
this -is- the original install.

Also as I said earlier I went into the kernel config and removed any 
unused drivers. (I left both IDE controllers in there, even though 
I'm just using the primary one)

At this point I may well just throw a different MB in there.
