What could it be I'm missing? The method of sourcing the rc.conf* files has changed. We have seen some problems in the past when people don't fully merge their /etc/rc* and /etc/default/rc.conf files. Try running mergemaster again, and make sure that all you have in /etc/rc.conf* is variable assignments, no executable code.
