I am using one right now... Most likely you need to upgrade XFree86. The version that came with FreeBSD 4.2 and 4.3 was using XFree86 3.3.6 I believe. This is because even though the newer XFree86 supports basically all the more popular newer cards the older X version had support for some really obscure old ones. You have a popular newer one and thusly should upgrade X. There are two ways to do this.... use the ports collection or go directly to www.xfree86.org and get the native FreeBSD binaries... [I got the native binaries... and did the manual install] The disadvantage of not using the ports collection is that uninstalling it is more difficult because you will have to manually keep track of all the programs and libraries that X puts on your system. I find that to be a rather silly argument since I never plan to remove X. XFree86.org has instructions on how to upgrade stuff too so don't worry too much.
