So if your passwords were > MD5 encoded, installing securedist would cause serious problems. You hit it on the head. This is exactly what happened. I thought for sure securedist was installed after I upgraded to FreeBSD. I reinstalled a clean BSD system on a different machine, but left securedist out. copied master.passwd from the non-working system to the different machine and all the pws worked! Now how the heck can I convert the MD5 stuff to DES? I thought I was on DES to begin with. :(
