Seems like I'm experiencing the same problem!

Set up is as follows;

iijppp on /dev/cuaa0
faxq   on /dev/cuaa3

btw: Finally managed to get my fax modem (GVC 144V42.bis) working for both
fax and data. Used exar setup rather than the rc144ac configuration (without
changes).
