I stand corrected, then.  I don't use floppy tape (I have an unsupported
800MB rusting away at the moment) so I guess I need to check the manpage.

Okay, checking out the ft(8) manpage you need to run it as follows:

tar (or dump) ... | ftp "tape description"

You must use preformatted tapes.  I don't think there's a format command.
