Well, you haven't told us the model of the monitor yet. Sony has made many of differing quality even at the same time. Check the panel on the rear, and see if you can find any corresponding information in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors. It's really important to do this; even if it's a cheap monitor, it could be a good one, and it would be a pity to ruin it. My cheapest monitor was a Nanao/Eizo 9500 (20"), at a time when they were rare as hen's teeth. I got it for free because the owner thought he couldn't use it.
