'make install' on x11/gnome can certainly take a while, as it wanders through its dependency lists, adding itself to +REQUIRED_BY in the relevant /var/db/pkg/* directories. Depending on other factors (memory, softupdates, etc.) a considerable chunk of this work may be carried out without disk activity per se. For reference: anaconda 628# cd /usr/ports/x11/gnome anaconda 629# time make install ... 13.567u 14.845s 0:25.76 110.2% 156+300k 0+10io 0pf+0w 25 seconds wall clock. This is on a dual Xeon/400, 512Mb, SCSI disks + softupdates with a few local bsd.port.mk modifications. -aDe -- Ade Lovett, Austin, TX.
