I fixed it by telling my motherboard (via jumpers) that I had an Intel DX processor instead of the Cyrix, and that (and I think this is the kicker; I bet my VLB IO card was being run too fast) it was running at 75 mHz, not 100 mHz (both were x3 speeds.)
