You aren't supposed to get a login screen on the serial line unless you enabled ttyd0 in /etc/ttys. For example, the following, ttyd0 "/usr/libexec/getty std.9600" cons25 on secure enables getty on the serial line. The default in /etc/ttys is for ttyd? to be marked 'off' (second field from the end). Change that and try again.
