Some of the netstat functions may work without needing to read the 
kernel symbol table.  What you're missing is a netstat that doesn't 
need to do that crap.  8(

Sure; just start a shell pointed at the correct vty directly.  You can 
only switch to a vty that has something running on it, but you don't 
need to be using getty, login or even init.
