The make in /usr/bin/ from the FreeBSD base system will work.  The errors
you're getting look as though they could come from using GNU make instead.
Try unaliasing "make", or re-installing /usr/bin/make from the
installation media.  Ordinarily GNU make is installed as
/usr/local/bin/gmake to avoid conflicts such as this.
