I'm not without experience in IT, and I know that hardware nowadays virtually never breaks. People who immediately suspect hardware are usually trying to protect their feelings of affection for some piece of software, somewhere. Sometimes I think hardware engineers will do the opposite, blaming software for everything, but I don't interact as much with hardware engineers, so I can't confirm this.
