No, John Birrell <jb@FreeBSD.ORG> spent a lot of time working on the upgrade so that you could get to 3.0-current.elf from 2.2.x. I've done this recently and was impressed that all of my 2.2.6 era applications continued to work flawlessly under 3.0/elf. Even XF86_SVGA! Of course I went back and rebuilt everything in order to get rid of the aout libraries, but it will work.
