The author of GD has decided to take the gif creation support out.
If you want GD with support for GIF images, you have to either get
an older version, or google around, and find the patches that add
GIF support to newer versions of GD. These patches are unoficial,
and have nothing to do with patches the FreeBSD ports framework
might eventually apply.
I don't remember the location of those patches, but IIRC it was in
.au.
