Couldn't find anything on the fixit floppy.  Tried what you suggested
with fdisk. Also went to disklabel and made sure the partitions were
tagged to their proper mount points (wrote both times). Problem now:
Complains of an empty partition.

Probably should just purchase 3.3 and upgrade from CD ;)
