Your cards are probably combo mono/color cards.  Many of the later mono
cards provided both MDA/Hercules and CGA support (CGA being the color
card in the original IBM PC).  These cards do confuse FreeBSD, which
tries to address them as color cards, even though they are in mono mode.

Changing jumper settings most likely disabled CGA support.
