I was thinking along the lines of disabling com1 or com2 in your bios 
(if the modem's an internal card) and moving it there.

There have been reports of some graphics cards using the io addresses 
of COM3 & COM4 (sio2&3).

Magic :-(  I wouldn't rule anything out.
