Maybe a corrupted file? Re-download the package from CTAN at http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/xcolor/,=20 install it over the old one and try again. Make sure that the output driver that you are using is supported by xcolor.sty! See the documentation (xcolor.pdf).
