ISO 8601 specifies the format yyyymmdd, with or without inserted
hyphens (not slashes), and with various bits omitted from the left
when they can be inferred from context.  Unfortunately, too many
protocols require the use of other styles of dates (see, e.g., RFC
2068).  The full format includes a time specification, with various
bits omitted from the right (assumed to be zero).
