From what media? From a CDROM, your NIC doesn't really come into
play.

Hmmm... Nope. Looks like it is not in the install kernel, but I still
see ie(4) listed in the GENERIC kernel.

The ie(4) is a jumpered ISA card, IIRC. The settings on the card have
to match up with the kernel's idea of where to find the card.

Once you install, ie(4) support will be in the GENERIC kernel.
