Consider what happens if you have multiple versions of a particular port installed. The classic examples I always use are Tcl and Tk, but ssh and some of the docbook ports work too. Me neither; I've been using a hacked up copy of bsd.port.mk for about two months now. :-) At least we got all the other stuff committed to 4-STABLE, so that people running 4.2-RELEASE but have a cvsup-ed ports tree will have the right things happen automatically.
