The reason that the compatability symlinks went away was that they broke a lot of links *between* documents. From the commit logs of www/en/ Makefile: ---------------------------- revision 1.84 date: 2002/06/27 19:55:40; author: nik; state: Exp; lines: +3 -21 Stop creating symlinks to the /FAQ and /handbook directories from the actual directories under /doc. This broke inter-document links if you started at http://www.freebsd.org/{FAQ,handbook}, instead of the longer .../doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/{faq,handbook}, and has caused a steady stream of complaints to -doc. Instead, have a static index.html in both those directories with a http-equiv="refresh" that points people to the right place.
