Greetings:

I am an extremely grateful user of FreeBSD, but I am also extremely confused
about the whole FreeBSD kernel configuration topic. My suggestions follow
after the email.

There is an old and new way of configuring and setting up kernels,
plus information relating to kernels appears to be scattered, some
in the FreeBSD handbooks, some in /usr/src/UPDATING.

Also, there is a possibility that the chapters and examples on
sample kernels are out-of-date in the handbook. The config program
does not like any pseudo-device options, nor does it like anything
after "device xyz" in the config file. I am updating from 4.3 --> 4.4.

Would be nice if someone consolidates all this scattered information
to make various pieces fit together. I have been using FreeBSD for
the past 4+ years and I am thoroughly confused.

Nevertheless, thanks sincerely for all your efforts!

Dinesh

Suggestions:

Handbook should reorganize the kernel in the following fashion:

1. What is a kernel ?
Boot process, (old, new). What does the system look for
2. What is the directory structure ? (old, new)
3. What are the various components within the kernel
4. Sample kernel
5. How to setup a custom kernel (old, new)
6. Gotchas to avoid (like mixing old, new files, etc.)
(Also mention old versions, new versions, etc)
7. .....
