I agree that /var should be bigger.  How about something like this:

In sysinstall if the user selects "auto defaults for all" do:
VarSize=FreePartitionSpace * 0.10
If VarSize < 20M then VarSize = 20M
If VarSize > 1024M then VarSize = 1024M

I think a percent with a max and min is a good solution that will work well
on systems with alot of mail/log traffic as well as on 170mb drives people
find in their basement.
