Try clearing the disk and putting a 2-4 MB DOS partition on the disk then installing FreeBSD after it. Some of those systems had very agressive BIOS's that would only allow annointed OS's to write to the boot sectors, as a kind of defence against people leaving floppies infected with viruses in the floppy drive.
