I have to admit that I don't know the answer to that question, but most 
people update their ports using cvsup.  There is a section on using cvsup in 
the handbook at www.freebsd.org/handbook.

Cvsupping the ports and the source to -STABLE isn't that big of a deal even 
on a 56k.  I think it took me about 40 minutes to go from 4.2-RELEASE to 
4.3-STABLE the last time I did an install.
