I'm still having a problem restarting Xwindows because it gives an error that it has not yet shut down. In response to an earlier email to this list, I took several people's suggestions to delete the X lock files (Thank you, all, by the way). I've searched my file system high and low for such files, but find none (I had found an .X8-lock file in /tmp I think it was an first moved then deleted that, rebooting and retrying startx to no avail.) I also used the strings command on the X files (not the TV show!) to see if anything lock-like showed up. It has a reference to ".X%s-lock" which meshes with what folks have said and with the file I found. But now that's gone and I still get the same error. I thought about reinstalling X, but figured I'd muck things up even more. Plus if there's a hidden lock file somewhere, I wouldn't find it anyway. Any other suggestions?
