I bet you're using sawfish...?  As I recall, this was a problem with an
early version of sawfish2.  I'm pretty sure you're already running the
latest version, so try deleting your ~/.sawfish directory (remember to
first backup the themes directory if you want to keep it).

I don't know of an analog clock for GNOME 2 (nor can I find one).=20
However, if you remove the date and seconds display from the digital
clock, it does get considerably more narrow.
