Interesting - I'd tried that already, but not with another window in the
same workspace (I use WindowMaker).  Opening up an xterm in the same
workspace as FB, then giving it focus and typing some stuff, then moving
back to FB, worked ok; nothing else seems to.

Oh well, thanks!  This is perhaps a WM problem, rather than something
strictly FB.
