Aha! That got me a lot farther. However, I would bomb out if glx was enabled. Everything else would work, including having DRI, strangely. Looking at the XFree86 log file found the answer to that new problem: (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so (II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation" compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.3203 (This card was an upgrade from a GeForce 2, for which I had installed the binary driver.) I probably just need to figure out how to clear that "wrong" module out, and get the right one. Probably a reinstall of XFree86, or something less drastic...
