i installed 2.2.6 on a totally virgin system. pentium pro 200, 128M RAM, 4G seagate disk, adaptec 2940. i've used that configuration successfully before. the system is awfully unstable. whereas normally i have uptimes measured in months, this one hangs or locks up at least once in a 24 hour period. sometimes there are no signs in the log, it's just totally locked - trying to switch between consoles with alt-F[1-4] doesn't work, even ctl-alt-del doesn't work. it just locked up again this morning, and this time i got some messages: Apr 7 07:14:00 flaya /kernel: pid 126 (cron), uid 0: exited on signal 11 Apr 7 07:14:14 flaya /kernel: pid 130 (sendmail), uid 0: exited on signal 11 Apr 7 11:10:10 flaya /kernel: pid 6413 (inetd), uid 0: exited on signal 11 Apr 7 11:10:11 flaya /kernel: pid 6414 (inetd), uid 0: exited on signal 11 Apr 7 11:10:20 flaya /kernel: pid 6415 (inetd), uid 0: exited on signal 11 Apr 7 11:11:39 flaya /kernel: pid 188 (getty), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped) Apr 7 11:11:39 flaya /kernel: pid 6416 (getty), uid 0: exited on signal 5 (core dumped) Apr 7 11:11:39 flaya /kernel: pid 6417 (getty), uid 0: exited on signal 5 (core dumped) Apr 7 11:11:39 flaya /kernel: pid 6418 (getty), uid 0: exited on signal 5 (core dumped) Apr 7 11:11:57 flaya /kernel: pid 189 (getty), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped) Apr 7 11:12:24 flaya /kernel: pid 187 (getty), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped) those gettys were me trying to log in on the console... i'd type in "root" at the login: prompt and it would core dump each time. finally i had to power cycle it. now it's chugging along nicely but it's a real ticking time bomb. any ideas? -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Plan: Eat right, exercise regularly, die anyway.
