I'm trying to get the Linux version of Matlab running on a (2.2)
stable system:

FreeBSD neale.econ.vt.edu 2.2.8-STABLE FreeBSD 2.2.8-STABLE #0:
   Mon Dec 14 18:58:12 EST 1998
   root@neale.econ.vt.edu:/usr/src/sys/compile/NEALE i386

Matlab seems to install fine. When I try to run it, I get a quick
splash screen and then:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
neale [tmp]% /usr/local/matlab/matlab5/bin/matlab

                            < M A T L A B (R) >

                            All Rights Reserved
                            Version 5.2.0.3084
                                Jan 17 1998

MATLAB cannot be started.

For troubleshooting help see the README file in the
$MATLAB/etc directory. As a last resort you can execute
      the script, $MATLAB/etc/lmdebug.

          $MATLAB = /usr/local/matlab/matlab5

      $LM_LICENSE_FILE = xxx@yyy
------------------------------------------------------------------

(where xxx is a port number and yyy is our license server)

Does anyone have a notion as to where I should turn?

Running the various Matlab lm scripts give me information about the
number of licenses and who has them, so it seems that at least
something can talk to the license server.

I currently have this installed in /usr/local/matlab/matlab5 and am
trusting the linux compatability magic to recognize what needs
linux compatability and what doesn't (??).

In case it helps:

neale [tmp]% /usr/sbin/pkg_info -a -c | grep Information | grep linux
