We have over 20 alphas running FreeBSD headless here. 6 of them are DS10s with nothing but IDE drives (and local hacks to get them booting off of ide drives). Just a WAG: Try putting a DELAY(1000) at the top of ad_transfer. There are some timing issues I've seen w/addump that might be biting you. I have NFC why a graphics card would matter though.
