Try this (time adjusted for the actual time you do it:

[onceler]~% date -v-31H
Sun Apr  2 03:49:42 EDT 2000
[onceler]~% date -v-32H
-32H: Cannot apply date adjustment
usage: date [-nu] [-d dst] [-r seconds] [-t west]
[-v[+|-]val[ymwdHMS]] ...
            [-f fmt date | [[[[[cc]yy]mm]dd]HH]MM[.ss]] [+format]
[onceler]~% date
Mon Apr  3 10:49:49 EDT 2000
