Do you see a message like "ncr0: <ncr 53c810......" ?? Another thing to try is to make sure the disk is spun up. There should be a jumper you can set on the rz28 to make it spin up at power-on. It might be as simple as to say 'boot dka0' and ^C out of it after the disk starts moving. (I realize that FreeBSD is supposed to take care of this, but I seem to remember another AS1000 owner complaining about this).
