Yes, but why resort to

when you can just do:
for i in `jot 16`
do
echo -n "cvsup${i} "
traceroute -n cvsup${i}.freebsd.org 2>&1 | wc -l
done | sort +1 -n
Getting the correct hop count is left as an exercise for the reader.
