Peter was working on it, but I strongly suspect he won't have time to
even think about this in the very near future and we shouldn't allow
him to add it to his plate, no matter how loudly he demands to suffer
to excess. :-)  It would probably be cool to find out what the last set
of issues he identified and/or fixed with this was though.

I'm not sure I'd call it a "decision", but there are strong leanings
towards egcs.  It simply seems to be moving more aggressively (and
more well-fundedly) in the right directions whereas gcc 2.8.1 has been
very slow to update.

Yes.  I can say authoritatively, for example, that there will probably
never be a new sysinstall or package handling system without this
change occurring since the new tools are written almost entirely in
C++ and TCL and require many features not provided by 2.7.2.x.
