That got it to do something, and the status worked, so I decided to
try tarring some stuff to it. Now I get:

Apr 21 00:50:32 bonkers /kernel: st0(aha0:5:0): HARDWARE FAILURE info:1 asc:80,8a 
Apr 21 00:53:34 bonkers /kernel: st0(aha0:5:0): timed out
