1) If only your prompt went wrong, you have to type
PS1='promptstring'
in sh/ksh/bash
set prompt='promptstring'
in csh/tcsh

2) If everything is garbled, it means that somebody send to the terminal
(or to the emulator) a Set Alternate character set sequence, so
try:
tput rmacs (ReMove Alternate Character Set), or
tput op
tput init
tput reset
reset
tput sgr0
I think, one of these will work.
