This is your problem. I've not tried 1.0pre5/6 but with 1.0pre2, I was
slowly eating all my memory/swap... (64 MB RAM + 192 swap !!).

Now that I've switched to fvwm2.0.45, all is fine and I have 30% swap on
average (with more windows !).

Afterstep is very nice but it is much too slow and eating too much memory.
