You're running into a process resource limit. See setrlimit(2) and getrlimit(2), and specifically RLIMIT_FSIZE. If your process is running as root, you can raise the hard limit beyond the size to which the file will grow (or infinity). If not, then you'll have to find the appropriate fix in the kernel to set the default filesize limit to your requirements. (With -current, you can set this up on a per login-class basis with /etc/login.conf).
