ok... maybe i've done something immeasurably stupid but i am totally stumped right now. suid binaries just stopped working on my system. it does not appear that they assume the new permissions they are supposed to. this includes mail, su, netstat, top, etc etc. i have tried (1) logging on as another user (2) turning off nis (3) creating a new user totally separate from nis (4) going back to kernel.GENERIC (i.e., rebooting) but to no avail. i just cvsuped and am making a new kernel... for what that's worth. this happened toa running system, out of the blue. first sign was that su stopped working. i've inspected the binaries and files in question and the suid bit is on, the group is correct, etc. thanks in advance for any help--also please cc: steve@farrell.org, as i filter the mailing list someplace where i might not get your response quickly under these circumstances.
