No, I'm not sure that the sound card (also a SB16) is set up
correctly.  :-)  I can think of a bunch of reasons why this isn't
working for me, and I haven't investigated all of them, so I didn't
want to waste people's time with it (yet!).

I grabbed the Linux 5.0.  By the way it's also behaving oddly for me,
but there have been reports that it works well for others, so again,
it's probably some dumb thing I'm doing wrong.

I found some other interesting things to hack on in my free time, so I
might not get back to fixing my RealAudio for awhile...  :-)
