I've not had a problem with it, ever since xv 3.10a came out. A few more details in your description could help -- what do you see; what do you do; what response do you get? What I do (to do it successfully) is hit ^G, then I (sometimes -- depending on what I'm capturing) select the "hide all xv windows" checkbox, then either select a window (button 1) or select a region (button 2).
