I just installed sendmail 8.9.1 on a FreeBSD 2.1.0 box (remotely located so still not upgraded to something more recent). Strangely enough it does not seem to bother to check MAIL FROM: for a valid domain. According to www.sendmail.org it should. It does check for illegal relaying, this according to the docs.
