I may have spoken too soon about the driver in stable being OK.

There was a change committed on July 20 which looks like it will break
probing of the PCnet-II chip.

There was a line added to if_lnc.h:

> #define HITACHI_Am79C970  0x2621

This is the id of the Am79C970A.

This went along with some changes to if_lnc.c that would attach it as
an ISA device.

I'll have a better look at it tonight. I'll test the driver at 100Mb/s
too.
