For David Dawes: The XFree86 readme suggests starting xdm from /etc/ttys. The FreeBSD FAQ suggests starting xdm from rc.local. Either way, if there is, for example, a power glitch reboot, xdm will not start without root intervention. I believe this is because the pid file exists. The xdm pid file is /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-pid. Should the pid file be in /var/run? Should it be cleaned-up at boot time?
