Yes, I rather suspected that you might have tried this first.

This is a very funny addresss.  I'm quite prepared to believe that
Microsoft makes claims like that when it can't find anything at all.

What does the BIOS say when you enter setup?  Also, do you have a
manual for the modem?  Is it a standard Dell part, or an add-on
(including something sold to you and preinstalled when you bought the
box)?

No, I can't think that.  The upgrade installation doesn't build a
kernel, so you'll still have the standard kernel.  What does 'uname
-a' say?

You don't even need to do this.  What does your complete dmesg output
look like (see http://www.lemis.com/questions.html if you have
difficulty collecting the output).
