Thanks for the reply Joseph, but it did not work for me. I got the same result as before "Panic: cannot mount root". I also followed Doug White's suggestion and looked at the FAQ, which led me to change the drive geometry in bios/setup to indicate a 512MB drive, and reinstalled, to no effect.
